With Thanksgiving less than a month away, our team at Paragon Dental wants to express how thankful we are to have you as a part of our dental family. Our practice really would not be the practice it is today without patients like you! In the spirit of Thanksgiving, and to show our thanks, we have a few tips that will help keep your smiles healthy during this feasting holiday, and for all other holidays to come. While we understand the desire to stuff yourself with rolls, stuffing, pies, cakes and all the other wonderful treats that normally flood the Thanksgiving table, this carbohydrate-rich, sugary diet can really do a number on your smile. However, luckily for you, there are some easy ways to combat damage while still being able to enjoy the feast put before you. 1)   Try to keep your meal as balanced as possible. If you opt …

When Eating Ice-Cream Is No Longer Fun, It’s Time to Call the Dentist.

Eating ice-cream. Drinking hot coffee. Enjoying an iced beverage. Even brushing your teeth! When these things become more painful than easy or enjoyable, it’s time to accept the fact: you have sensitive teeth. In healthy teeth, there is a little layer of something called enamel, which protects the crowns of your teeth—or everything above the gum line. Underneath that protective layer is another layer called cementum, which protects the tooth root. And under that layer is the dentin, which is less dense that it’s two preceding layers and contains microscopic tubules (hollow tubes or canals). When the tooth loses the enamel and cementum layers, the dentin is exposed, allowing heat and cold, or acidic or sticky foods, to reach the nerves inside the tooth. The result is hypersensitivity. Possible causes for the loss of enamel and cementum include:      Tooth decay (cavities)      Fractured teeth      Worn fillings      Gum disease      Worn tooth enamel …

Adult Teeth Grinders…This One’s For You

We typically think of teeth grinding as a children’s issue. But this malady, also known as Bruxism, affects 8-10% of the adult population. Bruxism can be tricky to discover because it happens mostly while you are sleeping. But if you wake up with a headache or sore jaw, it may indicate you’ve been grinding during your dreams! With children grinders, many times the phase passes as they grow. As an adult however, there may be some concerns if the grinding continues for a long period of time and remains untreated. Severe cases can wear teeth worn down to stubs. “It’s much like having a large football player standing on the tooth,” says Dr. Noshir Mehta, chairman of general dentistry at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and director of its Craniofacial Pain Center. During sleep bruxism, the upper and lower teeth may come into direct contact up to 40 minutes …

Toothbrush Rumble: Which Will Win – Manual or Electric?

It’s easy to automatically assume that just because something is electronic, it’s better than its non-battery powered counterpart. For example, many people would agree that they like driving an automatic car instead of a manual, because it’s easier or more efficient. However, if you find yourself in the dental care aisle and feeling a bit confused, here’s a little bit of info to help ease the decision making process. Both the manual and electric toothbrush have their advantages. A manual toothbrush will always get the job done. According to John Ictech-Cassis, DDS, DMD, “The idea of a toothbrush is to remove plaque and to stimulate the gums. Most toothbrushes will keep the teeth clean if you know how to use them.” With a manual toothbrush, you’re also able to gauge how much pressure you apply, so you don’t irritate the gums. As long as you brush twice a day for …

While Santa’s elves are busy tinkering with toys, we spend our days fixing smiles. As dentists, it’s what we do. Every day. If you are looking for something unconventional and unique, consider gifting your loved one with a partial or complete smile make-over. Here are some options to consider: Dental Hygiene Cleaning: Many folks in the 60+ age range don’t visit the dentist as …
